Can I ask Gibsonm.

How do you get on with the FG-88/Steyr AUG?

Being a southpaw and all...

:)

Well if I shot "left handed" I'd simply use a rifle set up for a left hander.

The bolt is modified to put the extractor on the left hand side and its a simple matter of removing a cover from the left hand side of the rifle body and putting the cover over the slot usually used on the right hand side. The last thing is to move the cocking handle from one side to the other.

So basically the rifle can be used by left or right hander, its just a case of setting up the extractor / ejection port / cocking handle to suit.

However having said all that, I'm a graduate of the SLR days where it was just a case of the rifle is built to suit right handers so you learned to shoot right handed or accepted the fact that every second or third ejected cartridge was going to hit you in the face.

So I shoot my personal weapon (carbine / pistol) right handed but do eveything else left handed. :)

The only PMs I saw were stuff about gamepads. :(

Thanks anyway.

The PMs I sent you referred to the Saitek Evo wireless joystick which is RH/LH convertible. The pic shows how it converts RH to LH. (I just checked the link and it is correct).

I also mentioned that I have a surplus Saitek Cyborg joystick which, like the Evo, is convertible, but uses the old fashioned Gameport interface. which is why I also put in a link to a Gameport-to-USB adaptor, available from Amazon (nothing to do with gamepads) - in case you were interested in it.

Just trying to help, but obviously not having much success. :(

I'd recommend Predator QZ 501

http://pant24.ee/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/DSC_4428.JPG

Its a simple and cheap joystick BUT has very good X/Y tracking capabilities, I think its perfect for targeting the main gun in Steel Beasts - aqcuiring and hitting moving targets is very easy with it. I have been using it since day 1 for Steel Beasts, I can really only recommend it.

or Trust Predator GM-2600 - same joystick, new name:

I will repeat it - where the T.16000 works, it's a great stick. Lots of buttons, programmable, left/right configurable, the highest input resolution known for consumer joysticks, and the Hall sensor to read the steering signals is free of wear and tear.

As far as I know I am the only guy who experienced this signal glitch caused by one (or too many) other USB devices permanently connected to my computer. At least when I was confronted with it, I couldn't find similar cases on Google. Chances are it won't happen to you.

I don't want to promote this stick as a "must have" for Steel Beasts. I just don't want to create the impression that MY episode is a representative experience when available evidence indicates the contrary.

Ssnake,

Nor am I advocating a joystick as a "must have".

I'm happy using a mose and when using the product anyway but at home that is what I use (or one of the specialist hand controllers - at least in training people before running something).

I am however creating a short list which the T.16000m is currently at the top of (not least because its still made).

The issue I now have is that almost every web based store is happy to sell it to me but if it's idea of "left handed" is no good, they wont accept it back.

So I'm now looking for a bricks and mortar store that has one on a shelf where I can walk in, try it and then walk out with it under my arm.

Trust Joystick GM-2600

From the linked site:

Item number: 13276 - This product is no longer available in the current Trust assortment.

It also seems to be "right handed" based on what looks like a bulge on the left hand side of the stick?

Thanks, but Saitek no longer sell either the Evo or the Cyborg (apart from the Cyborg FLY - which is another right handed, aviation centric, option. It has "built in" [moulded into the base] throttle controls and other "stuff" not needed for a simple joystick).

Well, the wireless Evo is still for sale on Amazon as I write this, but it is expensive.

I will say this just once more: 'I have a surplus, little used Cyborg 2000 stick that I have actually converted to LHD, and which you could have if you are interested'.

I even offered to send you a photo of the stick converted to LHD, but you didn't even acknowledge that. Some saying about leading a horse to water but being unable to make him drink comes to mind. :(

No thanks.

As I said:

1. Its not current (i.e. they don't make it any more); and

2. Its a similar issue to:

I suspect 10 pounds + postage from there equates to almost the $65 for a brand new one here and I still don't know if its "any good" until it arrives.

And if its "no good" it goes in the bin.

Hence the need to look at one first.

You can still buy new ones on ebay and on amazon. But yeah it is right handed... never thought of left handed people :o

  • 2 weeks later...

OK Christmas Break over and shops open again.

Found a bricks and mortar retailer who would let me have a look at the T.16000m without locking me into a purchase (i.e. couldn't send it back just because it wasn't comfortable, etc. would only fix faults) like the web based outlets wanted.

Took the laptop in (Windows 7 Home), set it up for "left handed" (10 secs work), plugged it into the USB port and played an instant action scenario.

Worked flawlessly. :o

No need for drivers, special software installation, etc.

So I'm now the proud and happy owner of a T.16000m.

Brought it home and connected to the desktop (Windows 7 Pro 64Bit) and again no issue (not even the one Ssnake mentioned) and have almost half my desk back!!!

It has a robust base (although no suction caps like the Saitek so it can possibly move around - but I guess blutack or similar would "fix" this if required). Need to spend a bit of time working out what the buttons are mapped to do.

Will need to label the buttons on the base at some point (if I use them) as they aren't numbered or easily distinguished.

Thanks to all who provided "left handed" opinions here and helped refine the decision making process.

So I now have a Saitek X52 Pro (in its box) which is about to go on eBay (unless someone here wants it).

Wow! Do you have plans? :)

Beermat? USB Powered Tea Keeper hoterer thingy??

Have you tried your REME type chaps?

But I guess they'll suggest this:

No just the space saved by removing the honking great two piece Saitek, one peice of which I couldn't use (even if right handed) but still had to remain on the desk to supply power to the joystick part and replacing it with a single piece joystick.

Well if I get so "enthusiastic" that it does start moving too much, I can just put a ring of dyna bolts around it. :)
