Independence Day

It's the 95th Independence Day of Finland today.

Under Swedish rule from 12th - 13th century, and under Russian rule from 1809 and independent since 1917, Finland has seen its share of war, last one being WW2. During the long and relatively violent history of the country and the people, finnish soldiers have been kept busy under the swedish, russian and finnish flags, and also a civil war was suffered. It can be said, that history of Finland is mainly history of warfare and bloody combat, so let's hope the status as the battlefield between west and east is now history for good!

Today the Finnish Defence Forces held the independence day parade in my hometown of Kouvola, and it was nice to roll down the snowy main lane in my trusty old Leopard 2A4 with thousands of people watching and waving.

Cheers!

" Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day! "

Congratulations and best wishes for the future to your nation and its people.

I think Finland is one of the few countries in the world that the British have never invaded - or even tried to.

We know our limitations. :)

Brave words. Yet 4 July remains purely an American holiday. :wink2:
