Speaking of cheap thermal imaging systems, if you want one with higher image quality than the FLIR, for about $200 that clips to your cell phone, most are getting this.

Great for around the house and checking for leaks of cold air and such, but don't expect military grade thermal performance.

For a bigger step up in performance, you can get the $1,600 phone clip on imager Therm App: http://therm-app.com/

FRANCE - 200 LECLERC TANKS TO GET MAJOR UPGRADE (MAR 16/DGA)

DGA -- The French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) has announced a 330 million euro (US$349 million) contract to Nexter Systems for tank upgrades.

The deal covers the modernization of 200 Leclerc tanks and 18 armored recovery vehicles, according to a DGA release last week.

The work is expected to enhance the tank's ability to operate within future "Scorpion" joint tactical groups.

The DGA said the vehicles will be equipped with interfaces for the new Contact tactical radio system and the Scorpion information and command system. New armor kits will improve passive protection, including against improvised explosive devices, said the DGA.

The project should keep the Leclerc in service through 2040.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2020.

UKRAINE - PLAN OFFERED TO UPGRADE RESERVE T-72 TANKS TO NATO STANDARDS (MAR 23/UKROB)

UKROBORONPROM -- Ukraine's defense holding company has indicated it is prepared to upgrade around 300 T-72 tanks that are in the army reserve to meet NATO standards.

The T-72 is not in active service with the regular Ukrainian army, noted officials from Ukroboronprom.

The company has made a proposal to the Defense Ministry to modernize them to the Polish PT-91 configuration, which meets NATO standards, according to a Ukrobonprom release last week.

Poland has offered the Ukrainian military the opportunity to evaluate the PT-91 at Polish army ranges, reported defence24.com (Poland).

The Ukrainian army is primarily equipped with the upgraded T-64BM tank.

YLE NEWS -- The Finnish army has issued a request for information for the potential purchase of self-propelled howitzer systems, reports YLE News, Finland's English-language news service.

The service has budgeted up to 100 million euros (US$108 million) for the possible procurement.

The army's current guns will become obsolete over the next decade, said artillery officials.

The goal is to replace these aging guns with a single, mobile artillery system.
