"Back to Basics"

QRH at Hohne on Challenger 2s - good to see the tanks out again. Is this indicative of a "back to basics" push for the British as well as the Americans and the Canadians, who have returned to look at their conventional war doctrines and TTPs?

Seems to me that if this is motivated by budget, they've forgotten how expensive the conventional wars of the past have been. But since we haven't recently had one aside from OIF, perhaps it is perceived that peacetime soldiering and training on a conventional war routine is less expensive than the last ten years.

No its just "A" war vs "The" war or Foundation War Fighting.

You need to be trained on a baseline skill set for which you can adapt and "A" war is it, not the highly specialised skill set that people have developed in the last few years fighting "The" current war.

I can just see how well we are going to go on the Korean peninsula, if we just applied the same skill set and approach as we have used in SW Asia for the last few years.

Oh right, the thing where the NorKors are being dicks again. I'd forgotten - of course there will be more in the defence news now about the return to basics thing. And now to think of it, this cropped up again when Canada announced its withdrawal from AFGH. Yes, context, good.
