Scout Platoon TO&E

Can't find any references to the typical vehicle and infantry types that make up a modern German Army scout platoon.

Nor a modern US Army scout platoon.

Could someone point me at a reference or tell me what makes those units up?

Thanks

Can't help with the Germans.

This was the "official" US structure in 1999:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/17-98/ch1.htm

That isn't "standard" though as depending on what you are talking about the "standard" varied.

This details the CFV and HMMWV "standards".

Depends if that counts as "modern" (i.e. do you need 2013)??

The Bundeswehr nowadays seems to use the Fennek as the only reconnaissance platform (and some UAVs). The old distinction between Luchs equipped light recce and Leo 1 based heavy reconnaissance no longer applies.

And no don't really need 2013. Would like 90's and later but would take 70's or later. I can't remember what made up the scout platoons attached to 4/64A back then. Seem to remember ours used 114's and Gamma Goat wheeled vehicles while the Cav units used a couple of 113's and a couple of M-60's in a scout platoon - but then my memory has been known to be wrong.

Good to know though it means my guess of a couple of Marders and a couple of Leo's was way, way off base.

Take a look through these two documents:

1. To Fight or Not to Fight: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=A45842D4036D2CE6!428&authkey=!ANFptkPVM8csnrY

2. Scouts Out!: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=A45842D4036D2CE6!415&authkey=!AMfPLLCym28Fx1s

The first focuses on US cavalry doctrine and oganisation from WW1 through present and the second focuses on reconnaissance doctrine and organisation of a number of countries over the same period. The first contains the organisation of units as text, so you will need to read it to find it, but the second contains it as diagrams so will be more obvious. Between them, they cover both US and German reconnaissance organisations during the period you're interested in.

They're both fantastic reads in their own right by the way, for anyone interested in reconnaissance / cavalry doctrine, tactics and organisation.

Cheers

You're right Pzr_Ldr - great reads. Bookmarked in my Military History/Reference folder.

Thanks
