Timeline:

1975:

After the cuban missile crisis in 1962, both sides where concerned about the danger of an "accidental" nuclear war.

Public opinion in the west shifted strongly against nuclear arms and the soviets where scared too. So til 1975 all nuclear weapon where dismantled.

1979:

Sowjet units intervene in Kabul against the government IOT establish a pro communist government. A lengthy insurgency follows.

After several years of bloody fighting in AFG the general become more and more unhappy with the supreme soviet. They are demanding stronger action against the west in the face of obvious support for the AFG insurgency.

Summer 1984:

After the death of Konstantin Chernenko a time of political unrest in the soviet union follows. A comity of generals grabbed power.

IOT to force NATO to stop supporting the the Mujahideen with Stinger missiles, soviet forces cut of west Berlin and lay effectively siege on the city.

July 1984:

NATO countries are calling in the Alpha contingents of reservists in the face of a major build up of forces by the Warsaw Pact. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH3REN5Fi_0

September 1984:

NATO and WP order a full mobilisation of their armies to counter the growing Berlin crisis.

Operation "Reforger" starts with massive influx of US units into western Europe.

October 1984:

NATO and WP forces are set up in their waiting areas on both sides of the border. The Situation is very tense, but there are hopes that last ditch talks in Helsinki will dissolve the crisis.

111500Zoct1984:

The radar operator at an AD site just east of FUHLENDORF makes a grave mistake.

While monitoring a NATO surveillance flight over the baltic sea, he unintentionally activates his tracking radar. Feeling under direct threat the pilot fires and AGM-45 at the radar station.

Within 45 minutes after missile impact northern Europe is in flames with the lined up tank forces crashing into each other....
