rump
I still think it was a mistake to retire them from the Dutch Army, but happy to see them going to Finland. Congrats! :drink:

Marko
From the news:Finland to buy 100 Leopard 2A6 tanks from Holland. Deal value would be 200 million euros. Hope this goes through! That would certainly give the Finns a very effective tank force. On top of what you guys already have . I am glad the Finns have the foresight to look to the future unlike other European nations who's only train of thought at the moment is budget cuts no mater what the cost. Is there still an Irish peace keeping force in Lebanon.

AKM
The Finns also retain one of the largest artillery parks outside of Russia in Europe. Great that they're getting more tanks and retain the conscript military. I like the general "one finger salute" attitude towards General Makarov's commentary earlier this year, about "Finnish defence exercises are unnecessary! Fraternal love for all Russo-Baltic people!"

Marko
Well, very soon Poland will have more Leopard2 then Germany :-)If what I have read is true 225 Leo-2A6 tanks is a relatively small force for a country as Large as Germany. has the tank fallen out of favour with the Germans as it has with so Many other European armies
kuri
I read that due to downsizing Germany is going to have 2 armored and 3 mechanized brigades, and the total amount of maneuver brigades will be less than Poland has (is planning to have?). Which is what probably leads to so many tanks being sold. Basically Bundeswehr is going to have 5 divisional commands with a total of 10 maneuver brigades, compared to 12 divisions they had during Cold War...
Members Ssnake
Well, the reality is that territorial defense is the least likely scenario these days. Expeditionary warfare in NATO context, on the other hand, is far more likely. Of those scenarios, the ones where you need a sustainable large armored force are, again, rather unlikely. As a consequence the armored corps has been reduced to a minimum. Whether all these assuptions will turn out to be valid, only time will tell. The Poles seem to be less optimistic about their Eastern neighbors, so they maintain a larger armored corps (but they don't intend to send it out of territory, let alone sustain a presence elsewhere in, say, the strength of an armored brigade or even a division).
Administrators Sean Posted December 20, 2013 Administrators Share Posted December 20, 2013 Past history indicates that Poland is right to maintain a strong army.

Abaddon
I read somewhere (internet) that the Leo2A6NL has an acceleration sensor that is used when firing on the move. Has anybody more information about this? How does it work and how does it actually help firing while moving? Also, does anybody know if the NL version has somekind of a digital TCCS? And if it has, what type it is?And last question, I read that all the Leo2A6NL are upgraded from 2A5 versions, so does this mean they have the KWS I+II upgrades in them? Thanks for your answers!PS. And I'm looking for more then just your average wikipedia answers...
Agiel
Well the only plausible military threat to the Netherlands is two, potentially three countries away, so there is that, and that eventuality is only barely more likely than Germany or France invading them.
Members Ssnake
I read somewhere (internet) that the Leo2A6NL has an acceleration sensor that is used when firing on the move.Yes, that's part of the general 2A6 package (2A6=KWS I=longer gun barrel; 2A5=KWS II=add-on armor; KWS II happened to get implemented before KWS I, but the basic upgrade decision was made for both packages). The L55 gun has a larger imbalance moment. To improve the pre-stabilization quality the acceleration sensor was added so that the stabilization system could react faster to counter rapid movements of the platform (in other words, the purpose is to increase the duration of each coincidence window). Also, does anybody know if the NL version has somekind of a digital TCCS?If there are some devices in it, I'm sure that they will get removed before any foreign sale. Battlefield management systems are still largely in development, and typically among the more security-sensitive equipment (like all (electronic) communication). Some early systems have been adopted but it seems that most armies prefer a low-cost engagement to build up the IT infrastructure first while the devices that make it into the vehicles are left to mature before a wide-spread employment. This is not the least due to unsolved user interface concepts. Do you use a touch screen (more intuitive, but not well suited to hands in gloves that are covered by a mix of oil and sand) or buttons, nested menus or a large number of discrete buttons, etc., finally also the question of screen brightness (it's supposed to be well readable in direct sunlight with a light dust coating on the screen, but to be dimmed real low at night as well, and must handle temperature ranges from -40°C to +60 or more, condensing moisture, ...)Additional challenges are bandwidth demands, frequency management, data transmission encryption standards, fitting additional antennas, and the increase electricity consumption especially in the smaller/lighter vehicles...
Abaddon
Thank you for your answer Ssnake. So the acceleration sensor is used with the cannons gyros to detect the movement?
