Tanker Books/Novels

What an outstanding resource, thanks for the heads up MDF!

I'm surprised folks around here haven't talked up that archive more. It's pretty incredible. Now if they'll just add issues from the 70's....

Also, all back issues of Military Review are available online as well. Tends to address higher echelon concerns, but still lots of good stuff for armor aficionados and members of CWAS.

Anyone know where I can get "Armies of NATO's Central Front" by Isby, for cheap!? So far I've only found them selling for hundreds of dollars!

I just bought a copy a few months back, but it was definitely not cheap.

Yes, I have it on my Amazon Wish List and I've yet to see it for less than USD $496.00, and usually more. Unfortunately, at that price, I'm not prepared to buy it no matter how good it is (it would be the most expensive book I've ever bought by a long shot). :(

No kiddin Panzer. If I had that money to spend I'd be inclined to invest it towards an i7 CPU, motherboard, and RAM.

Why the heck is it so expensive?

How do you like it so far, Companion? Would you happen to also have "Weapons and Tactics of the Soviet Army" to compare it to?

Yes I do have 1988 edition for Soviet army book.

The books are what they are; they show how the Western military analysts pieced together separate bits of information to predict a picture of conventional military balance.

So I'd caution against using the books as some sort of encyclopedia; some of the information is not correct or only partially true because simply the books were written in 80s.

But with some background knowledge yourself, you can glean some interesting bits, reports, and some tables like the one I posted on Tactics forum. "tank attack success rate"

The books were definitely worth my while.

Well, I've tried my luck at a couple of local used book stores but neither of them happened to have Armies of NATO's Central Front. How awesome would it have been if I had found a copy selling for less than cover price??? I did end up buying a few oversized books on late Cold War warships and aviation. I also discovered "Crusader" by Rick Atkinson. It's about behind the scenes stories of the first Gulf War. Any page I open it to seems to always have an interesting story I never heard about and very unlike the polished news reports and stories we've all heard about.

"By Tank into Normandy"

Stuart Hills

http://www.amazon.com/Tank-Normandy-Cassell-Military-Paperbacks/dp/0304366404

Brand new Officer Cadet graduate, greener than the paint job on his vehicle lands in Normandy and runs into 12th SS Panzer.

Rapid transition from new guy to experienced "old hand".

Descriptions of Padres giving last rites to the charred corpses of friends, still in their in burnt out vehicles, etc.

Just went crazy at Amazon (Chrissy gifts for the kids to give me!). Enjoyed First Clash so much I just bought second-hand copies of Red Army by Ralph Peters, The Third World War by Sir John Winthrop Hackett, and The War That Never Was by Michael Palmer.

Looks like I'll be having nuke nightmares for a while!

"Kursk", I thought was a really good book about tankers. It takes place in WWII and goes back and forth between a crew of a T-34 and German Armor Officer who commands a tank company. He is the tank commander of a Tiger I and it has an excellent tank battle that takes place where hundreds of tanks were fighting on boths sides. The area was so small that there seemed to be no front. It depicts the events at the battle of Kursk. Good read. I give it *****! Oh and I believe the auther is David Robbins.

Is this the one you refer to?

Thanks ..

For anyone interested in the Danish Leopard 2A5 I can highly recommend this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Danish-Leopard-2A5-Thomas-Antonsen/dp/1847680275/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386994046&sr=8-1&keywords=danish+leopard+2a5

It covers the evolution of the Danish requirement for the 2A5 from the Leopard 1 through 2A4 and of course baseline Danish 2A5 and QRF variant used in Afghanistan, or 2A5A2 in Steel Beasts. It's 172 pages packed full of multiple colour photos per page including many detail shots of the exterior and interior. Funnily enough, photos of the commander's and gunner's stations feel eerily familiar thanks to the detailed 3D interior model in Steel Beasts!

If you're a fan of the Leopard 2A5DK you'll love this book! :heartpum:

You can also buy it direct from the publisher here too if you want: http://www.barbarossabooks.eu/danish-leopard-2a5-p-12338.html?zenid=ac29f13eb5e756baf7d270cd7edc9a19. This is a fantastic place to buy specialist military and armoured warfare publications. Despite being in the UK and paying pounds, I buy many of my books on AFVs from Barbarossa Books.
