It's the difficult choice between aesthetic and memory saving (thus better performances).

If you have a good computer (and the beta of the 64 bits version above all), then go for the highres.

But bear in mind that Steel Beasts was initially a 32 bits version for an average audience (wich doesn't necessarilly got the latest hardware available).

It could also be the age of the file. Earlier artwork had more stringent requirements.

Also some textures don't need the high resolution (that is, will not apparently profit a lot from it, e.g. if the surface is somewhat mushy green anyway) whereas anything that shows readable text would probably improve noticeably. So, it really depends on which texture exactly, and what its purpose is.
