With the Mk1 FV432 to go backwards you push the steering tillers forward.

Actually you are just releasing the brake on the control differential.

So you release the lever (i.e. stop applying pressure by pulling back) and then the gear you are in determines if you are going forward or back.

Same as releasing a hand brake in a car and then going forward or back depending on which gear you are in.

This weeks AFV is Pansarbandvagn 302 / APC

The standard armored personnel carrier for the mechanized brigades is still the old Pansarbandvagn 302 that first entered service during the 1960's. It's a good design but it is getting long in the tooth, which means that it needs more than its fair share of service and maintenance in order to operate. It is currently being replaced in the armored brigades (plus some other units, notably in the far north of Sweden and in and around Stockholm) by what has been described as the best vehicle of its type in the world, the new Combat Vehicle 90.

APC 302 is included in the Mechanized Brigades in several different versions. These are:

– APC 302 A for troop transport

– Combat command/control version: APC 3021

– Fire-control version: APC 3022

– Gun emplacement version: APC 3023

– Radio relay version: APC 3024.

Basic armament for the Pbv 302 is a single 20mm Hispano-brand cannon. The cannon is fitted to a powered turret that is mounted to the extreme forward of the hull roof and to the driver's left hand side. Self-defense is further augmented by 6 smoke grenade dischargers and 2 x Lyran flare launchers are also present.

This weeks AFV VCC-80 (DARDO) from Italy.

The Dardo (previously called VCC-80) tracked infantry fighting vehicle is a joint development by Iveco and the former Oto Melara (now Oto Breda) to produce an IFV to meet an Italian Army Requirement. The first order for the delivery of 200 vehicles was placed in 1998.

It served with Italian forces in Iraq in 2004 and as part of the Italian Forces in Afghanistan.

The VCC-80 Dardo is a true IFV, having a powerful 25-mm Oerlikon-Contraves cannon mounted in electrically operated two-man turret. This cannon is provided with an advanced fire control system of a type more commonly associated with main battle tanks as it involves laser rangefinder and thermal imaging equipment. The cannon, which has a maximum effective range of some 2 500 meters, can be elevated sufficiently to allow it to engage low-flying helicopters. It also has a coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun, another 7.62-mm MG weapon station is provided on top of the turret for air and local defense. It is also possible to mount a MILAN or similar ATGW launcher on the turret roof.

The hull is welded aluminum onto which are bolted armored steel plates - such construction system saves weight. Five firing ports are available for the six troops carried in compartment in the hull rear which is also provided with a power operated ramp for entry and exit. There is also air conditioning and collective NBC system. In addition to an impressive array of optical vision devices, passive night vision equipment is provided for the crew (driver, commander and gunner).

The Dardo IFV can wade through water obstacles up to 1.5 meters deep without preparation.

Ask Katie, he pootled around in those for a bit.

1. Access hatches to steering system/steering brakes. A Few Times' a day you need to Open Them up and control/ adjust the steering brakes.

2. Swimmin screens are mounted on Some pictures Above the hatches, they are flipped up when swiming to create a bow.

3. There was Also a Wooden crate version on top Of the hatches to

Increase storage space known as "the tits".

Versions: from 2003 there was also a medic version with the turret removed and medical stuff added and one repair version with a big metal basket on the back for spare parts/tools besides using the troop compartments left side for tools as well.

Both versions are now out of service as the 302 conducted it last field ex last summer.

The cannon is fitted to a powered turret that is

He... If hand cranked is considered powered... yes... But nah the turret is hand cranked, but it does have 2 gears (fast/slow) that you can switch between by using a pedal on the floor (right next to the emergency firing trigger who is a foot pedal as well... don't confuse them! ;) )
