The K1/ Type 88

The K1 main battle tank is also referred as the Type 88 or ROKIT (Republic of Korea Indigenous Tank). It was developed by General Dynamics, who designed and built the M1, M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks. The K1 is based on the M1 Abrams technology but has a number of changes to meet specific operational requirements of the South Korean Army. First prototypes were completed in 1983 and series production commenced in 1985. About 1 000 vehicles of this type were built by Hyundai for the South Korean Army.

A number of major components of the K1, such as engine, transmission and fire control system were imported from other countries.

The K1/ Type 88

K1 Production began in 1984. By 1987 210 K1’s had been built and another order was made for a further 325 K1’s. By 1999 just over 1000 K1’s had been built. Its 105mm main gun is the American designed M68A1 (developed from the highly successful British Royal Ordnance L7) and license-produced in South Korea.

The four-man crew is protected by the British designed Chobham type armour, built in America. The diesel engine is the German turbo-charged MTU MB 871 Ka-501, which produces 1200hp and gives the K1 a top road speed of 65km/h with an operational range of 457km and is built under licence in South Korea by Ssangyong Heavy Industries. The K1 is also equipped with a Halon fire extinguishing system, which thanks to its internal infrared sensors, will automatically extinguish a fire in the crew compartment within 0.025 of a second! It is also equipped with a modern NBC system.

The K1 is a fully tracked vehicle supported by hybrid suspension system (combination of hydropneumatic suspension and torsion bar springs). This unique suspension system provides the capability of high speed cross-country travel and vehicle attitude control (kneeling) capability which increases the main gun depression angle to a maximum of minus 10 degrees. With its extraordinary maneuvering ability and low profile, the K1 can ford rivers up to 1.2 meters deep. With an additional kit, the K1's fording depth can be increased to 2.2 meters.

And the crew can still breathe?

Halon systems, in buildings, usually give occupants a short time to exit.

To deliver the maneuverability on demand, the K1 is equipped with a turbo-charged 1200 horsepower diesel engine providing a power to weight ratio of 23 hp/ton. The transmission has a planetary gear train with 4 forward and 2 reverse speed-modes. Shifting the transmission through the various speed ranges requires only a slight force applied to the shift selector. This shifting arrangement allows the driver to concentrate completely on his driving and tactical maneuvers. In high gear, the K1 can attain a maximum road speed of approximately 65km/h. However, for lower speed maneuvering, the low gear provides a continuous speed of 4km/h

To further enhance the K1's maneuvering capability, the vehicle can pivot around its vertical axis within its own length at the driver's discretion. This maneuver is accomplished by permitting one track to move in the forward direction while reversing the other. Also, its ground pressure of 0.90kg/per square centimeter, which is equivalent to or lower than that of any 40 tonne-class tanks, enables it to successfully maneuver in swamp/marsh zones.

K1/88

The K1 tank supported by the state-of-the art dual-axis stabilized fire control system which is combined with the electro-hydraulic gun laying system makes it capable of acquiring and destroying even a moving a target accurately in a short time on the move.

The Gunner's Primary Sight Subsystem (GPSS) consists of laser range finder, thermal imaging and daylight visual imaging subsystems integrated with a 2 axis space-stabilized sight platform which permits the gunner to detect, identify, acquire and track a target during day and night combat conditions, The thermal imaging system can acquire aoo targets within the K1's firing envelop in all weather conditions. The laser range finder can accurately measure distances up to 8,000meters.

The Commander's Panoramic sight (CPS) mounted on the turret roof provides day vision and a dual-axis stabilized head mirror assembly with 360 degree panoramic observational viewing independent of turret orientation. Combined with the GPS, the CPS assembly provides the hunter-killer capability which allows the K1's crew to rapidly acquire and destroy multiple targets ; while the gunner is engaged in destroying his primary target, the commander can automatically bring the main gun in line with the next target for the gunner to engage while continuing to seek out yet other targets to destroy.

Halon systems, in buildings, usually give occupants a short time to exit.

Many vehicles today have Halon or the newer replacement that is better for the environment (I forgot its advanced name...)

Once the system engages you are supposed to exit the vehicles damn fast. So be sure to not be unconscious or stuck in your gear vs belt.

If you are dead you do not have to obey the exit command.

K1 ARV

The K1 ARV operated by a crew of four is equipped with the latest recovery equipment. Its advanced crane, winch and dozer systems allow it to perform damaged vehicle recovery missions, and to provide maintenance service for armoured vehicles.

The K1 ARV uses common components of the K1 MBT to the maximum extent which provides for effective maintenance and logistic support. It has the same mobility performances to keep up with the K1 main battle tanks so that overturned or partly destroyed armored vehicle can be rapidly recovered or towed to the maintenance units.

The K1 Armored Recovery Vehicles was developed from 1989 to 1992 with technical support of German Kruff Mak maschinbau Gmbh in recovering system, and was deployed in 1993.

The K1 ARV, using the same 1,200 horsepower diesel engine and transmission, has the same mobility as the K1 MBT. With a combat weight of 52 tonnes, its regulated maximum forward speed on paved level surfaces is 65km/h ; its cross country speed is 40km/h. The K1 ARV has additional capabilities, i.e. powerpack transportation for repair service, and shunting operation in the garage. The ready-mounted refuel/defuel pump and welding machine, impact wrench, and automatic chain saw make it easy to conduct prompt and complete maintenance and recovery service. The Integrated Test System(ITS) specific to the K1 ARV enables crew members to detect and repair damage or malfunction quickly, and guarantees excellent maintainability and reliability. In addition, the K1 ARV can be supplied with emergency power in 10KW 28 vdc outputs from Auxilary Power Unit(APU) to continue to carry out rescue works such as welding while the main engine is not operated.

A 12.7mm machine gun and a light antitank weapon provide firepower against enemy vehicles or personnel the crew may meet during service. Smoke grenade launchers are also prepared to conceal the vehicle from the enemy's view and an Automatic Fire Suppression System and NBC-detecting system is also equipped to enhance the survivability of crew.

K1 AVLB

The K1 AVLB developed on the basis of the K1 MBT is able to carry out all missions including launching and retrieving the bridge with a crew of two. Main components of the K1 MBT, 1,200 horsepower diesel engine, automatic transmission, suspension system and control systems have been adopted to provide interchangeability and the best logistic support. The K1 AVLB was developed from 1988 to 1992, with technical support of British Vickers Defense Systems in bridging system, and was deployed in the mid 1990s.

With almost the same mobility performances of the K1 main battle tanks, the K1 Armored Vehicle Launched Bridges provide mechanized and/or armor units gap crossing capabilities which bumped into obstacles in combat areas. The K1 AVLB which had been developed from 1988 to 1992 with technical support of British Vickers Defense Systems in bridging system have been deployed in mid 1990s.

The K1 AVLB is a close support bridge layer which has the same superb mobility as the K1 MBT. With a combat weight of 54.7 tonnes, it can speed up to 65km/h on roads and has a cruising range of approximately 434 km as well as excellent cross-country mobility. It is capable of crossing trenches up to a width of 2.66m. It can surmount obstacles up to 0.8m tall, and can travel up gradients of 60°

South Africa Rooikat 105 Armoured Fighting Vehicle

The Rooikat 76 armoured fighting vehicle, with a 76mm gun, was developed by Reemit for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and has been in operational use with the SANDF since 1980. 240 vehicles were built and about 30 vehicles are in service with the SANDF. In 1990 an upgrade and redesign programme was started by Reumech OMC to customise the Rooikat for the international market, and by 1994 the development of the Rooikat 105 variant with a 105mm rifled gun was completed.

The Rooikat 105 is designed for high mobility day and night combat operations. Passive image intensifiers and thermal imaging equipment for night driving, navigation and weapon deployment permit round-the-clock combat operations. The vehicle has a combat mass of 28t.

The main role of the Rooikat 105 is combat reconnaissance with seek and destroy missions. The Rooikat has the fire power and survivability to engage in battle against selected targets. The secondary role of the Rooikat 105 is in combat support operations. In anti-armour operations the Rooikat performs a valuable role in protection against enemy armoured threats.

The Rooikat carries a crew of four: commander, gunner, ammunition loader and driver.

Rooikat

The hull of the Rooikat is of all-welded steel armour construction with the driver seated at the front, three-man power-operated turret in the centre and the power pack at the rear.

Over the frontal arc protection is provided against penetration from the 23 mm AP (Armour-Piercing) rounds fired from the Russian ZU-23 LAAG, widely deployed in both ground and air defence roles in Southern Africa. Trials have demonstrated that the hull design of the Rooikat provides a high degree of protection against anti-tank mines.

The driver, seated on the centreline of the vehicle, can enter through the fighting compartment or through the single-piece hatch cover that opens to the left. The driver's station (including the essential controls such as foot pedals, steering wheel and direction indicators) is fully adjustable and, when driving in the closed-down position, forward observation is via three periscopes, the centre one of which can be replaced by a passive night periscope. When closed-down the driver's periscopes can be cleaned by a compressed air cleaning system. The headlamps are under armour protection at the front of the vehicle.

A hull escape hatch is provided in each side of the hull, between the second and third axles, thus avoiding the crew being exposed to small arms fire if they were to evacuate.

The commander is seated on the right of the turret with the gunner forward and below his position, and the loader on the left.

The commander is provided with eight vision blocks to give observation through 360°. Mounted in the roof, forward of the commander's station, is a day panoramic sight with a magnification of x 12. This enables the commander to observe through a full 360° without moving his/her head. The sight can also be slaved to the 76 mm gun or uncoupled.

Rooikat 105mm

The turret sports the LIW 52 caliber-length full pressure 105mm GT-7 Tank Gun, exhibiting low peak firing forces due to the utilization of an advanced hydro-pneumatic recoil system. This gun has been subjected to a stringent qualification regime and fires the full range of NATO 105mm ammunition, including APFS-DS.

The LMT-105 turret utilizes a proprietary Turret Management System coupling sub-systems in a modular fashion - thereby allowing for efficient up- and down- gradeability of turret systems for various applications, both presently and in future. The LMT-105 turret can therefore be deployed in a wide variety of missions, including reconnaissance, raiding, tank killing and as a general purpose assault gun - with varying levels of fire Control and Sighting equipment fitted. The LMT-105 turret weighs in at 6,5 tons and is suitable as armament on both tracked or wheeled vehicles - with platform weights from 12 tons.
