TR-85

The first initiative to start the modernization was brought in the communist period. In 1978 the project of a radical upgrade of the T-55 was started and it took them 8 years to come with the TR-85 tank. It was improved on many levels, both in terms of firepower and in terms of protection. The basic armament remained in the 100 mm caliber but the new tank had a much better fire control and armour protection.

The first batch took part in the Romanian revolution and after the changes in the country leadership and fall of the communism the new modernization has begun. In March 1994 the new project of modernization made its first steps and many experts were pretty disheartened with the prospect of the new tank. Simply, the base for it was so old and out-dated that they felt there will be little use of modernization. Still, in the 1999 the project was finished and the existing fleet of TR-85 started being refurbished and upgraded to TR-85 M1 version.

TR-85

To make provision for the new engine , the rear was lengthened, and six pairs of locally-designed road wheels were fitted instead, along with new suspensions with more modern torsion arms. The new drivetrain was protected by the addition of metallic side skirts. This drive train gave a 0,895 kgs/cm2 ground pressure. Fixations on the hull rear were modified. The engine was the local built V2 55, 12 cylinder in V configuration, 4-stroke, 580 hp turbodiesel which gave a 13,8 hp/ton power-to-weight ratio and a comfortable top speed of 50 kph. Outside internal fuel, with the addition of the rear external drums, autonomy was 380 km.

TR85

The Romanian General Staff issued an order in March 1994 to commence a modernization program for upgrading the TR-85 tank to NATO standards.

The program received approval from the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) in April 1994. The development began in 1996 and 56 tanks were upgraded between 1997 and 2009.

The modernization improved the firepower, protection, mobility and communication systems of the vehicle. The program added new electronic equipment for fire control systems, observation and detection systems, engines, transmission and a braking system.

A joint US Romanian military exercise in the first half of 2014. Namely, the five TR-85 M1s were taking part in head to head encounter with five M1A2 Abrams MBTs during the exercise and the results were simply shocking for everyone. The exercise ended with a complete victory of the Romanian side while the calculated losses were 5 destroyed M1A2 and one lightly damaged TR-85 M1. It turned out that the Romanians did a great job with this tank and with applying the right tactics they managed to take out by many the best MBTs in the world. This will surely give a boost to the entire project and the Romanians will keep their TR-85 M1s operational for a pretty long time.

The program was completed in collaboration with foreign companies including Aerospatiale Matra, Sagem, Kollmorgen-Artus, Racal and several local firms including the ROMARM military consortium, METRA, Electromagnetica, FAUR, Elprof, UM Resita Aeroteh, IOR and Joel.

The primary armament of the tank is a 100mm A308 rifled barrel gun. It can fire four to seven rounds a minute, with a maximum range of 4,000m. The projectiles can penetrate armour of 350mm thickness.

The TR 85 M1 is also mounted with a 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun and a 7.62mm PKM twin machine gun.

Onboard ammunition includes 41 projectiles of 100mm, 4,500 coaxial machine gun rounds, 750 rounds for anti-aircraft machine gun, six flares and 24 smoke grenades.

Train as much as you want, there's a physical limit to what you can get out of a 100mm gun. Knowing that frontal attack is futile, going for vulnerable spots is the logical move. Harder to pull off of course, so you need tactically apt crews.

TR-85 M1

The turret is fitted with two six-barreled 81mm smoke grenade launchers and two four-barreled flare launchers. The system can create a thick smoke that blocks both vision and thermal imaging. The tank is also equipped with a smoke screen generator that is triggered by the driver. When activated, diesel fuel is injected into the hot exhaust, creating the thick smoke. The TR-85M1 is equipped with laser illumination warning sensors that can automatically trigger the GFM-76 smoke grenades and flares, thus disrupting the guidance systems of thermal and infrared guided missiles. The SAILR (Sistem de Avertizare la Iluminarea Laser și Radar, laser and radar illumination warning system) laser warning receiver can locate and identify the threat, warning the crew and triggering the DLC (Dispozitivul de Lansare Contramăsuri, Countermeasures Launching Device)

The gunner is provided with a day sight telescopic periscope with built-in laser range-finder and a passive night sight with light intensifier. The commander has a panoramic sight equipped with a second generation image intensification system.

The effective aiming at targets is achieved with the assistance of Ciclop-M ballistic fire-control computer.a third generation FCS and an improvement of the previous, second generation, Ciclop FCS (used on the TR-85 version and equipped with an Intel 8080 microprocessor, 1 ko of RAM and 12 ko of system memory). According to the manual of the Ciclop-M fire control system, the ballistic solution generated ensures a hit percentage greater than 95% for a target under 2000 meters and greater than 75% for a target between 2000 and 3000 meters.

Also, the Ciclop-M can be used to aim a target located at up to 6 km away with the OF-421 high explosive round, up to 5 km away for the BM-421 Sg APFSDS-T round, 4 km for the AP-T rounds and up to 3 km for the HEAT projectiles. The coaxial machine gun can be aimed at a maximum distance of 2 km using the FCS of the tank.

The gun is electrically stabilized on two axes by the EADS computer aided stabilization system. The new stabilization system improves the accuracy of the main gun and reduces the target engagement time, turret temperature, noise, fire hazard and maintenance. The turret has RKS roller bearings to ensure a better stabilization of the A308 gun. The gunner's day sight telescopic periscope features an integrated laser rangefinder (200 m to 5.000 m measurement distance) and an electronic reticle. Above the gun barrel there is a SAGEM MATIS passive thermal viewer designed to operate at wavelengths between 3 and 5 μm in the spectral band.

Initially, the TR-85 M1 tanks had an inferior SAGEM ALIS passive thermal viewer (8-12 μm in the spectral band) for the gunner, now present in export configurations. The driver has an AONP-I passive night sight, which is also the standard night vision device for the gunner on the older TR-85 tanks.[14][15] The commander has a SFIM (Société Française des Instruments de Mesure) EC2−55R panoramic sight with a second generation SAGEM image intensification system that can be independently directed to the target.

TR-85 M1

The armour of the TR-85M1 tank has a maximum thickness of 200 mm (multilayered) for the hull and 320 + 20 mm add-on armour on the turret.

The 20 mm add-on armour on the front of the turret has a modular appearance with a triangular profile.

Although it might look like bricks of explosive reactive armour, the add-on composite armour is designed this way for easy replacement after combat damage.

The tank also has side skirts as a protection against shaped charges. The metal side skirts have three holes each that form steps for the crew to reach the roof hatches.

On the sides of the turret there are ammunition boxes for the heavy antiaircraft DShK machine gun. The upper glacis plate has two track segments, while the lower glacis plate can be fitted with steel screens or a mine roller. The TR-85M1 tank also has NBC protection and an improved, rapid fire suppression system using non-toxic agents.The system, designed by L'Hotellier, protects both the crew and the engine compartment using halon. The modernized version adds an additional mine protection plate and a bar for the driver, which increases protection against mines and improvised explosive devices. Also, the older TR-85 tanks have a conventional driver's seat bolted on the floor of the tank, whereas the M1 version has a parachute-harness like arrangement. In this way, the driver does not have any contact with the hull except on the pedals and is out of the shockwave area of exploding land mines or IEDs.

TR-85 M1

Variants

The TR-85 tank has been referred to in Western sources as the TM-800, M1978 or Model 1978 and TR-800. The Romanian Army currently uses only the TR-85 and TR-85M1 designations. However, the early prototypes of the TR-85M1 were known as the TR-85M or TR-85M1A. The add-on armour of these tanks had a different shape and was welded. Additionally, the turret bustle had a different shape and the bore evacuator had a different position. A TR-85M1A variant is currently on display at the National Military Museum in Bucharest.

GKN Simba

The Simba is a wheeled armoured personnel carrier. It was designed by GKN Sangkey (now part of BAE Systems Land and Armaments) and is currently in service with the Philippine Army. A total of 150 were ordered by the Philippine Army and most of them were assembled locally from kits provided by GKN.

Of the 150 vehicles ordered, 8 were delivered in complete kit form, 2 in knocked-down kit form, and the other 140 were later assembled in the Philippines in a facility owned by the joint venture company Asian Armoured Technologies Corporation in Subic Bay.

The Driver and Commander can dismount via the cupola hatch and the Driver's side door. The vehicle used by the Philippine Army has a one-man turret armed with a 12.7 mm M2 Machine gun.

A wide range of optional equipment was offered and can be fitted to the vehicle including a front mounted winch, heater/air-conditioning system, and various weapon systems.

Philippine Army Simbas' are fitted with an air-conditioning system, mainly due to the tropical climate of the country. These vehicles have seen action from anti-insurgency campaigns against communist rebels in the north and central part of the country and have dealt with terrorists in counter-terrorism campaigns in the southernmost provinces in the island of Mindanao.

GKN SIMBA

The hull of the Simba is of all-welded steel armour construction that provides the occupants with protection from 7.62 mm ball small arms fire and shell splinters. Thermal insulation on the roof and forced air circulation are fitted as standard. A heater and/or full air conditioning were available as optional extras, as are various communications systems.

The driver sits at the front of the vehicle on the left and has bulletproof windows to his front and either side and a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the rear.

The 8x8 VBCI infantry combat vehicle developed by GIAT will replace the AMX-10P in French Army service and will operate as part of the medium weight force with other wheeled vehicles, such as the VBL and AMX-10RC. The VBCI will equip heavy forces, accompanying the Leclerc tanks. By 2008, GIAT had shipped the first batch of 85 vehicles. The complete program calls for the production of 700 vehicles (550 VCIs and 150 VPCs).

The command vehicle is the second version of VBCI. VBCI

The 8×8 VBCI off-road armored vehicle is designed to replace the tracked AMX10P, and early models weigh 25-28t in operational configuration (18t+ empty). By 2014, a 32t base variant had been certified, incorporating lessons from its use in Libya, Mali, and the Central African Republic. In either variant, its weight precludes airlift by C-160 Transall or C-130 Hercules aircraft, but would allow transport in the new Airbus A400M, the Boeing C-17, or leased IL-76s/ An-124s.

According to Giat Industries, the accuracy of the 25 mm Model 811 is such that all rounds will hit a 1.5 m diameter target at a range of 1,500 m. Terminal effect of the 25 mm APDS-T round is equivalent at 1,500 m to that of a 20 mm round at a range of 1,000 m. VBCI fire control system

The gunner is seated in the turret. The gunner's sight is supplied by Thales Optronique based in Guyancourt. It is a multisensor optronic sight that includes a direct day optical channel, a thermal imager, a laser range finder and video channel linked to the weapon fire control system.

The sight includes a new generation Catherine-QW multi-quantum well thermal camera, based on technology developed by Thales Optronique and Sofradir. The periscopic sight sub-assembly and the laser rangefinder are manufactured by Thales Optronics in the UK.

The T-84 is a Ukrainian main battle tank. It is a further development of the T-80UD. Development of the T-80UD began in the late 1980s. In the mid 1990s a contract was signed with Ukraine to supply 320 T-80UD tanks to Pakistan

After collapse of the Soviet Union fulfilling the contract was difficult due to disturbed nature of Soviet military industry.

A number of T-80UD parts were produced in Russia and their acquisition was troublesome. Also Russia interfered politically and at the same time competed on international market with their new T-90 MBT. This forced to develop local capabilities in Ukraine, resulting in the T-84.

This tank was revealed in 1995. It had a number of improvements over the previous T-80UD. It entered service with Ukrainian Army in 1999. Some sources report that only 10 of these tanks were delivered to Ukrainian armed forces. The only export operator is Pakistan, that acquired 320 T-80UB MBTs. However Pakistani tanks had many features of the Ukrainian T-84, including new turrets. In most respect the T-84 is similar to the Russian T-90 MBT.

T-84-M

The main armament comprises a stabilized 125mm KBA3 smooth bore gun fed by a carousel-type automatic loader and fitted with a thermal sleeve and fume extractor (bore evacuator).

The gun is stabilized in both elevation and traverse. Turret traverse is electric while gun elevation is hydraulic. The turret can be slewed through 180° in less than 5 seconds, as the rate of traverse of the turret on the hull is up to 40 °/s. Manual gun and turret controls are provided for emergency use. Types of ammunition that can be fired by the gun include APFSDS (armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot), HEAT (high explosive anti-tank), HE-FRAG (high explosive fragmentation) rounds as well as laser beam-riding guided missiles. The missile can be fired while both the tank and target are moving. The missile has a tandem warhead to defeat targets fitted with explosive reactive armour as well as modern spaced armour, optimized against HEAT attack.

Built-in anti-tandem-warhead explosive reactive armour (BATW-ERA) – intended to increase the tank’s level of protection against kinetic energy (APFSDS) and chemical energy ammunition (HEAT, HESH, HEP), including ammunition with tandem warheads.

The Nozh explosive reactive armour elements installed in special niches snap into action when hit by all types of hollow-charge warheads and sub-calibre armour-piercing projectiles.

The Nozh explosive reactive armour elements of the BATW-ERA do not detonate when hit by 12.7 mm bullets, 30 mm armour-piercing projectiles and shell fragments. The Nozh explosive reactive armour elements do not require any maintenance and are safe to deal with.

It takes the tank crew 2.4 to 2.6 hours to prepare the BATW-ERA array for combat operation within without the need to use any special contrivances (to do this, only the explosive reactive armour elements are to be installed).

Anti-mine protection

The anti-mine protection makes it possible to preserve the combat readiness of the crew and operability of the tank’s interior equipment in case an anti-tank mine explodes under the tank track (up to 10 kg TNT equivalent) or under the tank driver’s compartment bottom plate (up to 4 kg TNT equivalent).

To improve the tank protectability, the Varta optronic countermeasure system is integrated in the tank.

The optronic countermeasure system provides:

1. Confusing of the guidance systems of ATGM by putting out laser jamming covering the horizontal plane of ±18° relative to the main gun tube and ±2° in the vertical plane.

2. Jamming of the ATGM guidance systems that use laser illumination of targets, semi-automatic laser guided homing projectiles as well as artillery systems equipped with laser range-finders by activating the remote fast-deploying aerosol screens in a sector of ±45° relative to the main gun tube
