Dted data

Recommended Posts

Where does one obtain DTED data?

I am specifically looking for data pertaining to the areas around:

(Latvia)

Riga

Venta

Utena

Rezekne

(Russia)

Izborsk

Toropec

Though if feasible the entire country of Latvia,

And what is the maximum map size that Pro PE can practically sustain?

(I'm looking to recreate the wider campaign of the original Ghost Recon)

$65 for a dvd...

So theres no way of downloading these files then?

I can't justify $65 for files that I can't directly use.

That is equivalent to the SRTM-3 finished V2 data AFAIK, which is freely available from USGS, and in slightly different format and with remaining voids filled from e.g. CGIAR.

Some areas not covered by SRTM data are available from Viewfinder Panoramas.

Conversion from one format or projection to another is a trivial task. However, the data quality of SRTM-3 is relatively poor as it is much coarser than the SB grid, is not a ground level dataset, but represents the reflecting level of the structures/vegetation present.

The higher resolution SRTM data is still below the usable density within SB, has more noise (SRTM-3 is averaged to reduce the noise artifacts as one of the benefits of reduced resolution), and a higher frequency of voids.

Topographical surveys and processed Lidar data are much superior, but they cost a lot of money and are impractical for large areas.

If DTEDs were widely available, for free, and in good quality ... well, we wouldn't invest our own time and money in equipping the Steel Beasts standard installation with a range of maps. We'd simply provide the import filters and be done with it.

But it is NOT easy to get your hands on high quality DTEDs and other map data (road and water network, vegetation, buildings, other land use ...), which is why we decided that providing the import dialog functions would be useless for the typical SB Pro PE user. I'm not really sure why some of you are so ... obsessed with specific maps. One sand box is as good as any other when it comes to the application of tactical principles.

Your very ambitious!! I would suggest you make/finish an existing map (maybe a 15x15 chunk of one), and see how you like it before you even consider entire countries.

Heed Sean's advise - drawing Maps takes forever. I started on Salisbury Plain until Stuart666 beat me to it and frankly did a much better job, however it took him bloody ages.

Well what I'm after is the accurate placement of hills.

Something like a place hill/valley here tool for use with the completley flat map, would be nice.

Guess I'll just have to find an approximation....
