Guys - just a heads-up. An Alpha demo for T34 vs Tiger appears to be out! Links here (seems to be the only place I can find where it's mentioned).

The Russian language links also give a torrent option if you hate rapidshare.

I laboriously downloaded the dmeo last night but haven't tried it yet (tonight maybe).

Hmm - if the hyperlink doesn't work on this forum, go to SimHq's forum for this sim.

Edit - here's the links direct from the post at SimHQ:

well, after 5 minutes of wild button mashing, i found out this:

E: starts engine. make sure you're in neutral.

hold down the up arrow key, to spin up the engine, then press A(i think) to gear up. also make sure that you dont have auto driver activated.

and be sure to be in the drivers position.

still fiddly though.

The Russky link's tricky, but I worked it out with an Australian education (ie only English and swear words). I'll try to post some shots when I get home tonight. I used the torrent option for two of the three parts (just left it downloading overnight).

In terms of whether it's any good, it's too early to tell for me (I fired the guns, but couldn't get moving), but it certainly runs fine on my 2500+ barton at 1024x768 with everything else maxed out.

It has that T72 Balkans of Fire look about it and it has those Russian game quirks (some of the keybinds are still in Russian script, unintuitive keys, no documentation to speak of), but I hope to get it driving tonight and try some combat.

However, it is an alpha demo and there's some suggestion it wasn't officially released, so this demo might not do the game justice.

well, Rainer at simhq said this about the alpha:

Just remember - this does NOT reflect the current state of development, and the keyboard layout has changed since.

I don't know anything about that "demo", as I have never tried it. I just remember that during alpha the AI was shoddy and the code un-optimized and many, many items not in place, obviously... ;\)

Again, I am not sure if IDDK approves of this old code being out in the open now - just FYI.

It's fun, but certainly feels unpolished. I am still experiencing difficulties getting Irfanview to capture screens in-game and can't workout a screenshot key in the game, so have resorted to PrintScreen, so no combat shots yet.

Here's another shot. I got the tank moving, and have had fun with the mission, which involves attacking a vilage defended by bunkers, AT guns and some PZIVs. I have been blasting bunkers and AT gun emplacements with HE from hull-down and then supporting the infantry assault, attempting to flank the German tanks. I got around them on my last attempt and got a great flanking shot on two PZIVs. I blew the turret off the first one with two shots into the turret ring, but the second spotted me and knocked me out.

Some cool things that happen include your view being knocked away from the gunsight when your tank receives a hit on the turret (it's like you're thrown onto the floor of the tank), which means a delay to get back onto the sights, and your engine will shut down if you leave it on too high revs while stationary (remember to throttle down or turn the engine off when stopped for longer than a minute).

Overall, if this is the alpha, then this should be a good WW2 tank sim a bit lkike Panzer Elite in look and feel. It ain't no Steel Beasts ProPE that's for sure, but it's fun!

I don't think all the key commands are there, only the ones that display in the menu. H opens the hatches, Shift-F1 and Ctrl-F1 change sight pictures etc and there's apparently an fps display ket (F4 or F5).

I'd love to know more about how to tinker in the guts of games like this to work that sort of stuff out...

More screenshots please.

Here we go then - brace yourself for most of a mission in screenies:
